All it took was one look. Chauncey T. Beaver and Charlotte Beaver met on the Senior 2013 cruise across Lake Champlain last summer, the event that sparked the romance that would make Champlain’s mascot Chauncey and Charlotte the Champlain power couple they are now.
Some say it was the sunset cast across the sky, some say it was the way the wind blew through Charlotte’s fur as she boarded the cruise. “I just looked into those big eyes of her’s, and knew there was someone special inside. She was the one I wanted to be with forever,” Chauncey explains. “She just looked so familiar, like I had seen her before in a past life or something. I couldn’t explain it,” he said.
Smitten, Chauncey knew that he had to make Charlotte his, so he approached her dockside and they hit it off immediately. When I asked Charlotte what her first thoughts were upon first meeting Chauncey, all she could say was “Wow. I just felt the spark and I knew that he was the one who I wanted to be with for the rest of my life.”
For about the next two hours of the cruise, they talked in that special silent way only mascots know. They danced the night away, jumping into photos whenever possible. One special moment came when they reenacted that famous movie moment with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio scene on the bow of the Titanic.
Never one to wait, when the cruise ended, Chauncey knew the time was right. He bent down on one knee and proposed, solidifying their love. Charlotte exclaimed ‘Yes’ without hesitation and the couple has been together ever since.
Most recently, they were spotted promoting at the annual Champlain Snowball, the traditional winter dance at the College.
Now with Valentine’s Day on the horizon, the couple are almost giddy with anticipation. Charlotte kept coy, but Chauncey gave us the exclusive inside scoop. “I’m thinkin’ we go to the Lodge, get some fro-yo, maybe a plate of Moe’s Nachos, and then I’ll take her back to that spot on the dock where I proposed to relive that moment again. I guess I’m just a romantic beaver,” he explained, giving the statement emphasis with a slap of his tail.
