Tell Us About Yourself(ie): Gare Reid

By:Olivia Werenski ’17/Champlain College News

Over the course of the summer, the Class of 2018 Facebook group for incoming students to Champlain has been jam packed with students bubbling with excitement regarding the upcoming school year, so we’ve decided to use it to our advantage. Our new Tell Us About Yourself(ie) series will be a weekly profile series of incoming first year students, leading up to the week of orientation and into the fall semester.

The first group of selected students were given a list of questions to choose from, ranging from personal questions to Champlain questions and selected their best answers and sent us an accompanying selfie (get it?)

Once the week of orientation is over, this series will become open to staff, faculty, upperclassman, and more!

This week’s participant is Gare Reid, a Public Relations major from Sharon, MA.

What’s your phone wallpaper?

My lock screen is a picture of a soccer ball. The significance of the soccer ball is that it was a gift we gave our host family when I traveled with a delegation of ten youth and two adults from the Unitarian Church of Sharon tcrop(1)o Nicaragua to teach English in an elementary school and build a house in solidarity with our host family and the community. I hope to return with a Champlain College delegation in the near future!

Montreal or Dublin?

I want to travel to Dublin, because I want to have the full study abroad experience. I can take advantage of visiting Montreal sometime during the next four years at Champlain College, but the Dublin experience is a once in a lifetime experience of living with your friends for a semester in a different country, while learning about the culture and traveling to different countries in Europe and Great Britain.

Dorm room poster?

One of the posters that will be hanging up in my room is a map of Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. On the map I outlined my eighty mile, ten day backpacking adventure with friends. Throughout my climb to the rank of Eagle, the highest rank in Boy Scouts, this experience taught me key leadership and survival skills that I can use every day.

Did you play on a sports team?

During all four years of high school, I played on my school’s Ultimate Frisbee Team. I am looking forward to tossing the frisbee around at Champlain with friends!

Early decision or last-minute on your Champlain application?

I applied early decision. I knew right away that Champlain was the right fit for me when I toured the campus with my sister during my Freshman Year of High School. None of the other colleges and Universities that I visited measured up to Champlain College.

What’s your Netflix binge series?

Most recently I have been hooked on the shows House and Lost. I have watched the shows on and off while they aired on tv, but I now have the chance to watch them in sequence.

What’s one food you can’t resist?

My favorite food is definitely tacos! I hope that they find their way to Champlain’s Cafeteria!

What’s your favorite topping on a pizza?

My favorite pizza is Hawaiian (Ham and Pineapple). Although, my parents give me strange looks, of having the sweetness of a fruit on a pizza.

Smaller dorms or bigger dorms?

I definitely prefer small dorms, because it gives me the flexibility of generally having a quiet dorm to be able to study and sleep. Although, I have the ability to visit my friends in bigger dorms.

Beavers or your old high school mascot?

My high school mascot’s was an Eagle, so I would prefer a BEAgle (half Eagle, half Beaver) To remember my high school community, yet still be a part of the Champlain Family.
