All summer we’ve been talking to Champlain students with summer internships all over the country! This week we talked to a couple students working with some tech savvy companies. Read up on two rising seniors who are working with technology in completely different ways.
Danielle Lax ‘14
Competitive Computing (C2), Colchester, Vermont
Danielle Lax is going into her senior year at Champlain, majoring in marketing and specializing in graphic design. She found out about the company Competitive Computing (C2) from an email sent out by Pat Boera of Champlain Career Services.
C2 is an internet business firm specializing in e-commerce and enterprise infrastructure solutions. This summer, C2 has eight interns, representing a diverse range of schools nationwide. Each intern works in specialty fields relating to their degree programs and interests.
Lax is a marketing intern so she reports to the marketing communications manager for all of her tasks. Her responsibilities include everything from writing press releases for company related announcements to planning a large event for the company. On the creative side of the internship she also uses Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to touch-up photographs and work on any signs or posters C2 may need. Lax explains that it is a good feeling to see her work displayed (even if it is for the purpose of letting students at St. Michael’s know where their service desk is!) Most of her duties are structured on a day-to-day basis, but there are times when an unexpected task has to be completed before anything else happens.
“My favorite part about this internship is being able to actively contribute to the growth of the company, even if it is a slight margin. Because C2 is a technology consulting firm, I am not exactly in my element which pushes me to learn about the developing and analytics involved. It’s fascinating to witness the motions of a project being developed. It makes you appreciate the importance of people from different backgrounds working together to achieve that end goal. I feel like I learn something new every day, and am gaining a lot of hands on marketing experience that will help me when thinking of what direction to head in after graduating from Champlain. Also you can’t miss that great view of the mountains from the office!”
Joshua Bing ’14 also has an internship with Competitive Computing for the summer.
Peter Fitts ‘14
True Office, Boston, Massachusetts
Peter Fitts is majoring in Game Design at Champlain College. Through JobSpot, a service offered from the school, he was able to find an internship for the summer at True Office as a technology summer intern.
True Office is a company based in Boston that makes office compliance training games. Most compliance trainings have either been written or in video form, however, True Office is one of the first companies to make this an interactive experience that engages the employees in a more story driven game. Since they are more involved, more information is supposed to actually be absorbed.
As a technology summer intern, Fitts is working with the development team on several different game projects. He is focused on changing settings for games on the company’s online database, as well as xml programming for flash based games.
“The best part is that there are people my age there, and Champlain grads to boot. Also it’s super casual and starts at 9:30. Awesome experience so far.”
If you (or someone you know) have a summer internship you want to talk about email me at email@example.com!
